I’ve been using Adobe Audition (previously Cool Edit Pro) for years. It’s far superior to it’s freeware counterpart, Audacity, because of it’s easy-to-use GUI and advanced filters (I’d still recommend Audacity to anyone who doesn’t need to do something professional though). And I’ve rarely had any problems with it, but since my last format and reinstallation of Windows XP (SP2) I’ve had some very serious problems with the program.
Problem 1: BSODs.
Technical Information:
Stop: 0×0000008E (0xc0000005, 0xBF8E270c. 0xB5656868, 0×00000000)win32k.sys Address BF8E270c base at BF800000, DateStamp 43446a58
That’s what it would say when my computer would freeze and shutdown after just doing some random editing in Audition. Before the crash there would always be some graphical inconsistencies, like, a button or a menu jumping around.
I did some research and apparently the Microsoft IntelliPoint mouse driver causes this issue (which is odd…), so I decided I’d check and see if I had any such drivers on my system. I searched C: for “intellimouse”, “intellipoint”, “ipoint” but nothing appeared so I figured I didn’t have the driver installed… But that wasn’t the case. For some reason the driver could only be found through “Add or Remove Programs” in the Control Panel. After uninstalling it and rebooting the problem disappeared entirely.
Problem 2: Windows animation
For some reason, every time I start up Audition my Windows effect settings are changed. The setting “Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing” gets reenabled every time! This is really annoying since I really don’t like those effects. I googled and found that this is an unresolved issue which no one wants to deal with. Apparently it’s caused by the ASIO wrapper made by Steinberg. So Adobe isn’t gonna touch it because they didn’t make the wrapper and Steinberg isn’t gonna touch it because they have nothing to do with Audition… So the end result is; the customer is fucked, like usual.
Well, fuck you too Adobe.
